Ultra-Low Power Bluetooth
An ultra low power standard for short range wireless communications is to be based on Nokia’s Winree Technology. The standard will become part of the Bluetooth specifications and should accelerate the development of a new class of low power short range Bluetooth devices. These devices will have a range of up to 10 meters and will operate on button-cell batteries. Some applications include watches, toys and health monitors that could be linked to mobile devices such as cell phones. So far Bluetooth has mostly been connecting larger devices such as headsets or stereos but with the help of Wibree the industry will expand too much smaller low power devices. The standard is projected to be finalized by the first half of 2008, and soon after new devices should appear in the market. I think that a standard like this is a great step towards a new open market that will facilitate great innovations brining new gadgets for all of us to play with. Moreover, it is a continuation and driver of the ultra low power evolution that we are beginning to witness in consumer electronics.
