Power Management System for AM-OLED Displays

OLED displays are a good solution for portable applications because they do not require a backlight and save on power prolonging battery life. However, these displays are not that simple to power, they require two regulated voltage rails. STMicroelectronics has introduced a single on-chip power management system for lithium-ion battery operated AM-OLED displays. I don’t have to much experience with the efficiency of these types of voltage regulators so I’m not entirely sure about the STOD1412’s performance. It has efficiency of 80% from 10 to 30 mA and 85% from 30 to 120 mA. This to me sounds very typical for a DC/DC converter. The chip offers a full range of control features and its inverting PWM converters work at 1.3 MHz. Overall it looks like a simple solution for powering OLED displays and like I wrote in a previous blog, these displays have excellent benefits for portable designs.
